Cecilia Brady - May 2004
I started to do Pilates, in part, because of an experience walking down the escalator at the Dupont Circle Metro. I have had some muscle weakness since birth that was never clearly diagnosed. It didn't limit me terribly in day-to-day activities, but no exercise regimen I tried seemed to make much difference. I learned to live with the limitations.
I moved to DC in 2001 for graduate school. During my first month here I was meeting friends for dinner in Virginia on a day when we had a huge summer rainstorm. The Metro escalators and elevators were all out. I still wasn't used to the vertigo I felt on those long escalators, and was not happy about walking all the way down on wet, rainy steps. I did so, slowly and carefully, one step at a time. At the bottom my quads were tired almost to exhaustion, and I was sore for a week. I wondered just how much I would like living here.
As I got closer to finishing my graduate program and considering career options, I knew I wanted to find a job that involved international travel. I wanted to be able to go on any assignment - if my new job required me to go to Kabul for two weeks, I didn't want to worry if I could physically handle it. I had heard about Pilates for years, and decided it was time to try. I started in October 2003 with one session a week. A couple of months later I added a second weekly session, and was amazed at how quickly my strength was increasing. Later I started weight training, at an intensity level I never could have tolerated before. I continue to be amazed at the increased strength I am experiencing, which I never thought was possible. I look forward to my Pilates sessions and have the absolute highest regard for my instructor Jessica. Although I still don't walk all the way down the Dupont Metro, I can now do almost half. My next goal: walking up!!
