Sarah Alexander Goldfrank, Attorney - July 2003
"What is pilates?" My quick and easy answer to this question is: strengthening and stretching exercises that may appear to a non-practitioner to be 'aerobic yoga.' But pilates IS in a category and class of its own -- it is founded on core exercises (and each of our "cores") that each of us learn, study, sweat over week after week. What is so fantastic about this form of exercise is that it works for individuals of all shapes, sizes and ages. All of us have "somewhere to go" in terms of both our overall health and fitness in particular, and Pilates helps us get there.
I love the fact that I am continually learning new things about my body's abilities every time I lie down on the mat, the reformer or the cadillac. Pilates has truly changed my connection with my body -- mind, muscles, breath and spirit. After struggling through the beginners classes (and the horrid stomach series that still makes my stomach burn), I remain utterly amazed at my body's ability to learn the routines and achieve teaser 1, 2, 3, let alone corkscrew level 3 and kneeling side kicks. Not only is the routine a great workout, I find that a morning mat awakens me fully and makes me aware of "how I'm feeling" -- be it fully rested and relaxed, or otherwise.
Also, a mat workout is a great fit with a busy lifestyle. All you need is comfortable clothes, a mat, and 20-30 minutes, and you've got a great way to exercise, at home or on the road. Finally, I admit I like the results I've seen -- my posture is better and my body more toned. Moreover, I appreciate my body for what it can do. And that's worth it's weight in gold.
P.S. Pilates alone is not the source of my obsession; the FANTASTIC instructors at Excel (including Kerry, Lesa, Jill -- who sadly has moved to CA, and Michelle) have helped me go places I never thought I could.
