I have been very curious about Pilates since the early 90's. At that time, I was in New York and very involved in movement for performance and dance. A lot of good dancers used to talk about how much Pilates helped them. Strangely, though, I never took any Pilates until last year.
I had gotten out of shape so I started running and doing yoga at the start of last year. As I began to lose some weight and get flexible again, I felt my mid-section needed some strength work. Pilates has helped tremendously in that area and others.
Now that I have progressed into some intermediate exercises, it is very exciting to feel the difference in my overall strength and flexibility. My golf game has gotten more powerful and balanced and I don't get the stiff back from jogging anymore (I try to "scoop" while I run). It's also very challenging for concentration. You can't just drift off and phone it in. So in that way, it is a good exercise for learning control both physically and mentally. Now it is equal in importance to running for me, and I do some yoga to warm up and cool down.
The great thing is that there is so much to learn if you want, or you can settle in with the basic five. I'm hoping one day to learn the advanced mat and reformer and stay fit for life.
