By Joel Mateer- July 2001 I am very active at both work and play. A great passion in life is competitive sailboat racing. Over the past twenty-some years I have raced on dinghies to 12 meter America's Cup boats all over the world . The racing can be demanding and it is important to be in top physical and mental condition.
Ten years ago, while working out at the gym I injured myself which eventually led to experimental surgery for a herniated disk in my back. The pain was nearly intolerable and I felt I had no other choice. The surgery was successful, but within the first two years after surgery the discomfort returned and I found myself suffering from chronic back pain.
About one year ago the pain again became intolerable and once again I sought advice from a surgeon. His suggestion of course was surgery. I briefly contemplated the idea but the thought of another invasive procedure as well as the recovery time motivated me to seek out an alternative solution. My wife suggested Pilates. She had many times before but I was finally convinced to have a more open mind.
I am now doing my Pilates mat work 3 times a week and the basic five mat exercises have become a part of my racing warm up. The Pilates Method has strengthened my abdominal muscles and given me a great deal more flexibility. The only back pain I feel now is an occasional tweak. I now move much more mindfully and efficiently, preventing injury as well as having a more competitive edge for racing.
