Pilates Profiles

By Vanessa Newton - January 2002

On March 13, 2000 I began my journey with Excel Movement Studios. It was an evening session with a new instructor, Dianne. I didn't know what to expect but I was mentally prepared for anything -- so I thought. I was a bit intimidated by the Reformer but Dianne was very patient and before I knew it those 50 minutes flew by. I was so amazed by all the different exercises we completed and so surprised at how hard Pilates really is to do. There were so many things to remember: scoop your stomach, breathe, keep thoses heels high, relax those shoulders; you know what I mean. Working with Dianne totally supported my decision to work one-on-one instead of with a group -- I needed all the personal help I could get. And I was hooked but also extremely sore days later.

Within six months I noticed that I was getting more toned and my clothing was looser. Wow, I have a waist again! What a fabulous feeling! I haven't had a waist since 1996 so I figured I have to keep doing this Pilates. Talk about "improved body image and self-confidence" -- believe the hype because I have that. The added bonus of improved flexibility...let's just say that improved the relations in the bedroom.

A year and a half later, I still love and thoroughly enjoy Pilates. I have improved in my Reformer work and am very proud of my teaser work. My weakness is anything that involves lifting my hips. That's a real joke.

I am a believer -- Pilates does make me more conscious of my body. Pilates has improved my posture and body alignment. Pilates has given me strength, flexibility, coordination and range of motion. I am proud to say I'm somewhat of a klutz, but now I'm a graceful klutz.

I really appreciate the fact that instructors are very patient, especially Dianne. Whenever she demonstrates a complicated exercise and makes it look easy -- I always raise my eyebrow and give her the "oh, sure Dianne I can do that" look. Sure enough she's got me doing it. Week after week Dianne diligently works with me to improve and she helps me get through exercises when I get frustrated. But the main thing is we have a lot of fun -- even though she makes me sweat and ruins my hairdo.

So I will continue to tell everybody how great Pilates is and how it can improve their lives too. It is so worth it. I give many thanks to the team at Excel Pilates.
