I consider myself an avid runner (over 35 miles a week) and for 7 years that was the only form of exercise I was doing. I knew I needed to incorporate some strength and flexibility into my routine and I started reading more and more about Pilates -- fortunately, I did some research on the internet and discovered Excel Movement Studios. That was over a year and a half ago and since then I've been a regular Pilates student.
I can still remember my first beginner mat class at the DC studio and saying to myself, "this is a lot harder than it looks." I'm now getting ready to start an advanced mat class and I'm amazed at how much progress I've made in such a short period of time. Not only do I feel stronger in my running, but I'm in awe at my increased flexibility, the efficiency in which my body moves and the positive change in my posture. I look forward to my weekly mat classes with a great group of women as well as my Friday morning duet sessions. Just when I think I've got an exercise "mastered," like magic Kerry pulls another level of difficulty out of that Pilates hat. I have learned so much about my body and every week I get to challenge it to go to new places.
The Pilates Method is a thinking persons exercise which takes total concentration and commitment, but offers a tremendously rewarding experience in return. Thanks to Pilates I feel like I'm reaching my goal of a balanced body.
