John Stefancik - August 2004
What's this new yuppie-get-healthy phenomenon I thought? Some kind of cult? But I already knew Kerry DeVivo before her future fiancee offered to take me to a class. I already thought highly of her and certainly trusted her judgment, so it wasn't too big of a stretch to think this activity might be good for me.
Pilates doesn't sound too hard, and it can only make my stomach flatter, I said to myself.
Before Pilates I wondered how I could be only 34 years old and yet see stars just when I bent over to pick something up from the ground! Before Pilates I wondered why I didn't have any energy after a few hours sitting at my desk at work. I felt myself sliding down the path that frankly most people go down: eating too much and getting very little exercise. And before I started Pilates I was skeptical of it, thinking it was some people's hokey religion.
Having been a serious runner for many years I'd knew I succeeded with exercise that worked by brain and my body. There is just no time for that, I thought. I own a small business, how the hell could I take time off to lift weights? Running wouldn't make my stomach flatter, so why bother even going? I'll just try to eat less and maybe one day I will get on an exercise regimen.
The invitation to try Pilates got me hooked. Now I am almost two years into an active Pilates schedule I feel great. I look better. I'm much more flexible, I'm more energetic, have better posture, better digestion, feel less stress, and I even have more ladies asking me out on dates (I only seem to remember this after I've had a few drinks and I'm not with my wife and three small kids).
With more knowledge and experience, now I try to spend more time thinking about my range of motion and tension and flexion of muscles during workouts and homework. The progression I've made to this point is quite fulfilling. I've found something that I can work at my whole life. And as long as I continue, I get to keep a flatter stomach.
